Building Maintainable PHP Applications: Foundations is the first course on Codyssey, and all 17 lessons are now published. The course is free. It opens a six-course series on writing PHP applications that stay easy to change after the first few years.
The project arc is familiar: the first month feels fast and the codebase fits in your head. Two years later, a two-line change takes a day because nobody is sure what else it breaks, and someone proposes a rewrite.
Instead of blaming the framework, the course looks at how the way we think about code pulls projects toward that state. It covers the mindset that comes before patterns, architectures, and "clean code" rules. None of it depends on which framework you use. It's more theory than code, on purpose: the "why" comes before the "how".
The 17 lessons are split into four chapters:
The course is marked intermediate. It's written for developers who already build PHP applications and keep ending up in codebases that are hard to change.
Patterns and Principles is the second course in the series. It moves from how to think to what to do in the codebase you already have: patterns and habits you can use in an existing Laravel, Symfony, or plain PHP project without a rewrite. The course page is up and the lessons follow.
Insights and quick tips stay free to read, and new free courses, learning paths, code reviews, insights, quick tips and projects keep being released alongside the paid catalogue.
